Despite the efforts made in the field of education and health promotion, the healthy and responsible use of the Internet continue to be one of the great challenges we face today as a society, especially in the area of children and adolescents. A collaboration agreement was signed between UNICEF Spain, the University of Santiago de Compostela and the General Council of Computer Engineering Colleges, to carry out a study capable of providing a diagnosis of the use and impact of technology on adolescents, analysing both the habits of Internet and social media use, the consumption of video games and online gaming, as well as different risk practices, such as sexting, contact with strangers and even cyberbullying. This study also incorporates the motivations, beliefs and expectations of teenagers. The implementation of an unprecedented methodological, institutional and human deployment was materialised in an empirical work in which a total of 265 educational centres from all over Spain took part, which meant having a sample of almost 50,000 adolescents from between 11 and 18 years of age in Compulsory Secondary Education. The general objective of this study is to make a basic diagnosis of the current use that Spanish adolescents make of the Internet, social networks and, by extension, ICTs, with an emphasis on possible risk behaviours, problematic and/or potentially addictive uses. In order to be able to provide institutional decision-makers, both at national and regional level, with objective data on habits, usage patterns, motivations, emotions, beliefs and expectations, which will help to better understand the role technology plays in adolescent’s lives and, consequently, to design more effective prevention strategies.
