The truth about lie detection
Although we have much experience with telling lies, our lie detection abilities are generally very poor. We only detect a little over 50% of the lies told to us. This does not only apply to lay people, but also professionals, such as police officers. The current presentation will evaluate why this might be the case. On the one hand, people might pay attention to wrongful deception cues. On the other hand, useful and valid cues to deception might be scarce. The available research supporting these claims will be critically evaluated. Furthermore, potential study designs to examine people’s beliefs about deception cues and their lie detection abilities will be discussed.
