Facing Cuteness: Babyschema triggers caretaking orientation towards newborn infants
The Kindchenschema describes specific features that characterize a cute infant face and isthought to trigger parental care, the most fundamental prosocial behaviour. The underlying mechanisms that release parental care have not yet been fully resolved. I will present a series of studies where we investigated perception of neonatal features in men and women and how these may influence caretaking motivation. Results suggest sex differences in the ability to discriminate cues to cuteness. The reported sex differences may be explained by influences of hormones (estradiol, progesterone, oxytocin). I will then go on to present a study in which we investigated whether physiological stress affects caretaking motivation differently in women and men. Here we found sex differences in caretaking motivation, such that stress led to decreased caretaking motivation in men but not in women. I will finish by providing experimental evidence for the universality of the well-described concept of the Kindchenschema.
