Jeff Nador Talks – Consistency of Face Identity Processing
@ 10:30 - 12:30
At the individual level, there is quite a bit of variability between scores on tests of face identity processing (FIP). Measures of intra-individual FIP consistency can be used to refine selection of those with superior abilities. Here, we assess the relative consistency of super recognizers (SRs) in face matching and recognition. Psychophysical assessment of face matching shows that SRs exploit spatial frequency information significantly more consistently than neurotypical controls. Additionally, SRs’ (and not controls’) face recognition is consistent with memorability. This suggests that consistency can be a useful tool for revealing both qualitative and quantitative individual differences. Finally, we assessed efficiency and consistency in a large cohort of police personnel, finding that their face matching consistency across viewpoints explains individual differences in performance on three common FIP assessments. Overall, consistency predicts superior FIP, and could hold practical benefits for personnel selection in other domains of expertise.
