Title: Colour metaphors we live by: on translation of colour words and colour metaphors
Abstract: Translation of colour terms is an interesting research topic, engaging both for cognitive linguists and translation scholars and practitioners of any other field who have tried to find appropriate equivalents in foreign languages. It may seem fairly easy to translate colour terms from one language into another. However, colour is often a culture- and language-specific concept and finding appropriate equivalents in both target and source language, which correspond to each other in a neat way, should not be underestimated. The phenomenon of metaphor has been discussed predominantly with respect to translatability. The research questions include how colour terms and colour metaphors are translated, how different language-specific or culture-specific colour terms are translated and whether we can discern a difference between professional translators and non-translators based on qualitative analysis. Most common translation strategies of both colour terms and colour metaphors will be brought out.
