The Mind Possessed
Psychologists usually ascribe to mental illness the experience of being ‘taken over’ by a different self. However, religious experiences of possession are widely prevalent across cultures. Such experiences are usually characterised by changes in sense of identity, uncontrolled gestures, and loss of memory; early psychological accounts to explain possession phenomena relied on stereotypes (e.g. pertaining to primitive or intellectually inferior people). I will describe the preliminary results of a study we conducted with individuals who regularly experience religious possession in Afro-Brazilian religions, where we attempted to understand what potentially differentiates these individuals concerning cognition, personality, and mental health.
