Juan Carlos Hughes – LGBTQ+ Christians in Switzerland: How affirming and non-affirming church messages and imagery cause different feelings of acceptance in LGBTQ+ Christians

@ 10:30 - 12:00
Geopolis 4314

According to a 2014 study by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, 71% of queer respondents stated that better acceptance by religious leaders would allow them to feel more comfortable living as lesbian, gay or bisexual. Additionally, a 2019 National Survey of Swiss LGBTQ+ people for whom religion was applicable indicated that the last social context they were “out” was churches and one of the top places they experienced discrimination was churches. Therefore, our research focuses on two things. First, we explore the casual relationship and degree to which feelings of acceptance in LGBTQ+ Christians are affected by church theology (i.e., messages and imagery). Second, through a focus group, we seek to understand how churches have affected the perception of the LGBTQ+ community and how LGBTQ+ Christians navigate their queer and Christian identity. Ultimately, our goal is to understand how LGBTQ+ people can be better included in Christian and public spaces to feel accepted and flourish.
