The future of research in deception detection – Frédéric Tomas

@ 10:30 - 12:00
Geopolis 4314

Detecting deceit has always been of interest when human communication occurred. Recent studies emphasize general rules, such as "Humans are terrible at detecting deceit", or "Verbal content cues are more reliable than nonverbal cues". However, there are still a lot of unknowns that need to be considered. In this presentation, I will outline three main future areas of research. The first one concerns the consideration of the baselining strategy and the context in which it is produced. The second relates to the delay verbal deception detection techniques have with the computational wave, and will give guidelines for future research on computational linguistic means to detect deceit. Finally, the third axis of this lecture will emphasize the importance of idiosyncratic variability in deception detection tasks, including a perspective on the abilities of both the detector and the deceiver.
